After moving states and now broadcasting from North Carolina, I’m proud to present the third episode of ATE: Day 1, ESL 1.
Gosh, do you remember that first day? For some of you, it was only a few weeks ago. But as all ESL teachers know, we experience day 1 several times a year, as new students are always pouring in (especially around December).
So, what do you do on the first day of class when your kids don’t know English?!?
We start off with a discussion of the importance of ice breakers—full disclosure, I’ve always shied away from ice breakers. Somehow, I’m always worried I’m doing it wrong. If you’re like me, this is a worthwhile discussion!
Next, we talk about diagnostics and how to get a Welcome Wagon together by prepping the whole receiving line. In other words, getting the whole school on board to assure workflow from signup in the district, to navigating their schedule.
Finally, we discuss what that first day can be like for those lone wolfs: the traveling ESL teachers. You won’t want to miss it!
